R&L communications work highlighted in Benefit magazine
By: Charity Gourley
Recently Rael & Letson’s communications work for Northwest Plumbers & Pipefitters Health Fund (NWPP) was featured in the IFEBP’s Benefits Magazine as part of their series on “what’s working”.
The article highlights how custom communications has helped NWPP boost engagement in their wellness programs and increase overall awareness of their health benefits in general.
What we did

The communications program our team implemented for NWPP includes:
- A detailed communications plan to build awareness of benefits, increase engagement, and educate participants to help them self-serve
- A new logo and brand to help participants better understand where their benefits are coming from and quickly identify plan information
- An easy-to-use website at the core of all ongoing participant communications (nwplumberstrust.com)
- Regular ongoing communications, both digital and print, tailored to member needs and concerns
How it worked
The proof is in the pudding, and although results take time, NWPP pointed to some immediate results they have seen just in the first year or so:
- A noted decrease in participants calling business managers with questions about benefits
- A decline in benefit appeals which can indicate that participants better understand their benefits and know how to navigate care
- An increased ability for participants to self-serve on the NWPP website, which has meant a reduction of administrative burden
- Increased program/services awareness and participation, with gradually growing rates in wellness program adoption
- A greater awareness around eligibility and the hour bank, which has resulted in increased engagement
- Improved communication around retiree health, and more.
You can read more about the communications program and NWPP’s success in the March/April 2026 issue of Benefits Magazine.
