In Memory of Harvey Chan

May 11, 2010

Dear Friends,

It is with great sadness that I convey news of Harvey Chan’s passing at the age of 47, after a heroic ten year battle with cancer. To us at Rael & Letson he was a friend, colleague, and mentor. He was also a loving husband, father, son and brother. He will be terribly missed.

Harvey was born in Canada. He attended school at Simon Fraser University and graduated with a B.S. in Mathematics in 1989. Harvey joined Rael & Letson in 2001, and was an Associate of the Society of Actuaries, a Fellow of the Conference of Consulting Actuaries, a member of the American Academy of Actuaries, and a member of the Canadian Institute of Actuaries. He was held in very high regard by his team, peers and clients alike.

Professionally, Harvey was one of the best. Personally, Harvey was kind and playful. Those of you who were ever in a car with Harvey behind the wheel do not need us to tell you he drove a cab to help pay for his college education and a part of him stayed close to his cabbie roots. While actuaries have a reputation for being devoid of personality, Harvey loved to defy the stereotype, often with self-deprecating humor. In his office a nerf gun rests next to a bookshelf full of actuarial resources and family snapshots. He loved his family, loved his work, and was relentlessly dedicated to both.
